Springtime Poppy Tour

Springtime in Greece the mountains come alive with color: the yellows of wild mustard, the reds of the poppies, all dotted against a backdrop of deep green hues. Although you can do this itinerary on your own, GVR founders Carole Heiman & Basil Kezios will be leading a small group in Spring 2012.

Join us this spring as we accompany a small group of traveler’s on our most favorite Peloponnese journey. Following this 7 night road trip we’ll be spending Easter in Athens and welcome you to join us for a traditional Greek Easter celebration in Athens (and beyond … Easter Sunday we have a special surprise for anyone who stays through the weekend.)

As we journey through Greece’s “other island”, Pelops Island (more commonly known to the outside world as the Peloponese), we find travelers marvel in surprise as the landscape changes from lush evergreen forests to arid mountain ranges, to endless miles of olive groves melding into the sea.

This rambling road adventure begins in Athens, takes us over the Corinth Canal and to the AcroCorinth, on to Nafplion, Ancient Epidaurus and Mycenae. We overnight in a small mountain village. We’ll be welcomed to our first overnight stop with dinner in a local kafeneio, where the proprieter, Mrs. Zoi, will have our dinner waiting when we arrive.

Day 2 is a leisurely day. After breakfast we’ll explore the village, visit with a local cheesemaker, and then take a drive through the mountains, visiting several traditional villages, where we’ll have a chance to learn about the trades traditional to this area, including silversmithing, as well as taking a hike to visit a hidden monastery in the Lousios Gorge.    Tonight we’ll dine in a local taverna near the guesthouse.

Day 3 and its time to bid farewell to our lovely mountain home. We’ll travel west to Ancient Olympia and visit the Temple of Apollo Epicurus, designed by the same architect who designed the Parthenon in Athens.  This day also includes an optional hike to a waterfall so beautiful you’ll think you were somewhere in the tropics. Working our way down the coast we’ll overnight in a charming coastal village beneath a Venetian fortress, where our room’s balcony’s jet out over the peaceful bay.

Day 4 we’ll enjoy breakfast overlooking the bay before heading through the pine forested path to the castle entrance. After exploring this site we’ll cross the peninsula taking a short detour upward to stop at Ancient Ithomi.  A local guide will provide us with the areas rich history. This is an extensive site and one that very few tours visit. From here we head into deep Mani, almost to the tip, where our home will be an historic guesthouse perched at the tip of the small village’s seafront peninsula.

Days 5 & 6 include horsebackriding on the beach and into the mountains, breadmaking with a local, a visit to the southernmost tip of mainland Europe and to the site of an ancient Roman settlement.  We’ll dine on freshly caught fish and sample some of the many foods and flavors local to the Mani Region.

On day 7 we’ll journey back toward Athens, stopping along the way at the Byzantine city of Mystras where we’ll tour the monasteries, and then we’ll have lunch in Sparta where we will also pay a visit the very well designed Olive Oil Museum.
